This is a good guide book, as all the guide books in the series, but I did expect a bit more from it. I travelled around Italy together with my husband the summer of 2005, and we used this guide book a lot. But it is a guide book, nothing more. There are quite a bit of things that have changed since the book was last edited, but this is expected. We are planning to send the findings we did to the editor, so that it can be added or changed in the next edition, perhaps.
We felt that the book focused too much on churches, castles etc, and a lot of really interesting things were missed - like the local food markets, which we love to visit. There wasn't much of "different" or "special" recommendations, it was just focusing on the "What to see ... Read More:

We used this book for a trip to Umbria with our children ages 9 and 12 and thought it was great, both for the walking and the eating. We have been to Tuscany several times and wanted to branch out to Umbria on this last trip, and can only say we wish we had done so sooner. We stayed in the lovely town of Norcia, and did the "san Eutizio" walk: an amazing adventure with children! Norcia was an easy place to be with kids, the hotel recommended in the book was extremely friendly, the town had such a safe feeling and enough of interest (particularly the gelato bar) to the kids to keep them busy. The walk - one of the longer ones in the book - was an ambitious one for kids, but gave them an exceptional feeling of accomplishment at the end, and they ... Read More:

Walking in France is a joy. The French network of sentiers and randonees are very impressive. Of course, if the French are going to go walking, they will want good instructions and it is certainly difficult to get lost in the main walking areas, although it is very easy to go a whole day without meeting another soul!

I tried several walks in the Auvergne and one in the Burgandy region. Great walks all. Lots of useful information.

Walking is a great way to discover France and this guide should be the inspiration you will need!

This book helped greatly in finding walks in areas outside of the part of the Dolomites that we know best. Its not step by step detail and assumes some competence on the part of the user; thats fine because I need suggestions and a gentle steer, not hand holding. On return from Italy there were a small number of quibbles concerning changes in signage and other details that we had noticed along the way that we notified to Cicerone. We were very surprised to be contacted by the author to discuss the points raised. That's customer service and its very clear that its a guide written by an enthusiast: you can't want more.

I've used this book on 2 trips I organised to the Dolomites, and found it to be excellent, lots of walks, many of which can be completed in a day.
If you planning a trip, it's a must buy. You need to buy the Tabacco maps mentioned at the start of each walk, in order to get the most from the book.

i bought this book on the basis that it would help me plan my walk from Pamplona to Santiago and beyond. it had a schedule of between 20 and 45 km per day. for the unseasoned walker, this was optimistic and unfortunately, there was a heat wave and walking anything above 25km a day was totally rediculous.
there are better guides out there for those who want to set their own pace, want to find out what is beyond the next refugio and what amenities are in the next town and for those who want to enjoy the camino and its people for what it is, its a good place to start, but don't carry the whole book if you only want it for the last 20 pages.

We only went to Lake Garda as opposed to the entire Lakes area, as we were attending a wedding in Malcesine and looking for day trips - but virtually all the reports are negative in this book and therefore unhelpful. Yes, I know it's going to be touristy - especially when we went in August - but these are the Italian lakes not some unspoilt paradise. Some of those touristy places are quite nice you know - espeically if you find a nice little corner near the lake, or a quiet piazza for a cool beer in the shade.
Reading this gave me the feeling that the authors had a really rubbish trip to Italy. Shame, because I had a great one despite this book.
