Having just spent 3 weeks in Romania, Macedonia & Albania - this guide was a true travel companion.

Having used the 2005 version of this guide to travel around Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia & Croatia in March 2006 - this one was much more useful and the writers had gone to great pains to make everything accurate (unlike their Western Balkans guide which was awash with misinformation and inaccuracies, normally regarding telephone numbers etc)

Having also brought the Bradt Albania guide with us (thank god we never relied on this as their pricing information for accommodation was grossly out of date & there was a real laziness in updating vital information) the Lonely Planet was the one that got grubbiest from ... Read More:

I used this book for an inter-railing trip in the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary and Slovenia, and on the whole found it very useful. The transport information was fairly thorough, but I also had to rely quite a bit on webistes (which were pointed out by the book). I generally went by their accommodation recommendations, which were good on the whole, although there was definitely one choice in Slovenia I wouldn't visit again!
It covers all the basics of what to see and do, where to stay, and where to eat with more depth than a guide to the whole of Europe would. There is also quite a bit of cultural information for each country, and some key phrases. Everything seemed quite up-to-date and accurate at the time, and I would recommend it.

This is a good guide book, as all the guide books in the series, but I did expect a bit more from it. I travelled around Italy together with my husband the summer of 2005, and we used this guide book a lot. But it is a guide book, nothing more. There are quite a bit of things that have changed since the book was last edited, but this is expected. We are planning to send the findings we did to the editor, so that it can be added or changed in the next edition, perhaps.
We felt that the book focused too much on churches, castles etc, and a lot of really interesting things were missed - like the local food markets, which we love to visit. There wasn't much of "different" or "special" recommendations, it was just focusing on the "What to see if ... Read More:

This is the second lonely planet book that I have bought, the first being south East Asia which I found invaluable. The book is a little big not exactly pocket size BUT it can answers nearly everything you need to know without giving too much away so you still get the adventure. Packed full of places to see, phone numbers, where to go for emergency help. Ratings for hostels and much more

All in all this is a great book and I am looking forward to using it later this year when I go travelling Spain & France on my Motorbike.

I have recently returned from a trip using both the Lonely Planet to the Middle East and a separate country guide to Jordan. This particular compilation is sparse on cultural, historical and practical information (it is no more than 150 pages longer than the entire single country guide to Egypt), generally out of date (in particular, regarding prices and budgeting) and often misguiding (for example, several maps are marked with street names that are completely incorrect). If you are looking for a guide book to help plan a trip to the Middle East then you would be better off considering a different series, investigating the single country guides or not taking one at all.

Verg good map, if your interrailing, this is much better than the map you get with the ticket, many more stations are listed, although if your just staying in major cities/capitols you can prob make do with the interrail suypplied map.

I have visited quite a few Greek islands and found this book extremely useful. I recently went to the Cyclades and the detail was excellent, however if you're going to Syros/Myknonos area I'd also pack Nobble Hospital of the Aegean by Paul Judges which offers some fascinating insights.
