If you are familiar with the Lonely Planet series you know what this book is about, and as with the other LP guides I found it very helpful during my trip. Lots of great info for the traveler who likes to explore off the beaten path and the economy minded traveler. Very helpful info concerning the ruin sites. Made my hole trip great! The only sad part was my visit to Playa Del Carmen. Last time I was there was over ten years ago when it was a small village with unpaved streets, now it has grown into a small version of Cancun. Oh! one other bit of advice, If your into the ruin sites you must read John Loyd Stevens books.

Since my original review I have to add a recommendation: TOURIST IN THE YUCATAN cool thriller set in the Yucatan!

I believe the title is far more revealing than one might imagine. On the whole, I would highly recommend this book as a foundation or starting place for a trip to Mexico; though inevitably for a general guide, bredth of information surpasses depth.

The book is broken down into rather helpful zones or regions of the country, making the act of planning far more convenient. Each zone is subcategorised into cities and towns (most with a street map of the town centre). This precedes a broad description of the history and points of interest in the town, then a list of some of the better eateries, hotels, transport links, and nightlife. Beware, however - details about bus times and such like can change often - note the year of publication of your edition, ... Read More:

I must confess that I am thoroughly disappointed with this book. The list of questions on the blurb and on product review pages suggested the book would be able to offer practical advice on issues and circumstances which a traveller may encounter. Presented alphabetically by theme and subtheme (each receiving a single leaf or rarely more than two), the sections of the book offer little more than the most superficial glance at any given area - and they are cliched to say the least. Superstitions, for instance, is a terrible waste of a page. The only concrete example is that tuesdays are unlucky for weddings; beyond which rural sorts are 'particularly suscpetible to physical/medical scares'. For good measure, the author writes of imported superstitions, to fill the remaining ... Read More:

: The Rough Guide to Mexican Spanish (A Dictionary Phrasebook)
The first time I went to Mexico I tried my Galician on the people and I did not get anywhere. They simply could not understand me. Recently I have been back and took this guide with me. It made a lot of difference. I managed to communicate and the Mexican people I talked to looked happy I spoke their language instead of trying to impose the language of Spain on them.

This guide covers all the expected areas, like food, shopping, accommodation, etc. It is very good, but more phrases would be even more helpful. Then you could use the vocabulary lists in more combinations and enlarge what you can say. Perhaps there will be an extended edition with more of it. I will buy it too!

This is brilliant! At long last something really good for Mexican. You learn what people say there, not European Spanish they cannot understand. They have understood me this time! I can recommend this course.

I also showed it to some Mexican people who seemed to approve of it. I guess this is another good sign the course is good!
