Have just returned from a 5 day trip in Rome, using this little guide as one of the books used whilst there. It was very helpful, although it's quite tiny it was packed full of useful information, with good pictures, descriptions and advice. Although the maps only focus more on the centre of Rome they were adequate for our needs 4 days out of 5, as good as the map handed to us by our hotel.

They say don't judge a book by its cover, this book at first appears an excellent resource, but in practice is sadly lacking. The maps are inaccurate as is much of the information provided about sights within Rome. This does not live up to the standard I have come to expect from a Lonely Planet Guide.

I bought this book as it was supposedly a handy pocket guide, with maps. It wasn't, I spent alot of time cross referencing things with another guide book to locate them. I also wasted hours of my life going to find recommended restaraunts 3 out of 5 I looked for were closed,and not just out of season closed, out of business closed. And this book is only just a year old! And nowhere does it mention you can't smoke in any bars, restaraunts, cafe's etc! Good job I had "Lets Go Italy" with me or Id of been very hungry aswell as tired.

This was a usful guide to Rome. Only real issue is around restaurants but this is the same with any Lonely Planet/Rough Guide. Either they are no longer there (probably go bust) or they are not as expected. With food I would recommend you look around and dont make a rash choice. Also, try to avoid the main tourist areas for food/drink as you will get ripped off. It seems that there are two price lists... one for tourists and one for locals. Rome is a fantastic city and this book will guide you through well. The latest version is available and is only £6.99 so I think its worth the trade up. The main differences though is mainly around where to stay, eat, drink but if your not too concerned about those and just want a book for the main attractions ... Read More:

This is a good guide book, as all the guide books in the series, but I did expect a bit more from it. I travelled around Italy together with my husband the summer of 2005, and we used this guide book a lot. But it is a guide book, nothing more. There are quite a bit of things that have changed since the book was last edited, but this is expected. We are planning to send the findings we did to the editor, so that it can be added or changed in the next edition, perhaps. We felt that the book focused too much on churches, castles etc, and a lot of really interesting things were missed - like the local food markets, which we love to visit. There wasn't much of "different" or "special" recommendations, it was just focusing on the "What to see if you are a tourist", ... Read More:

As the other reviewer has said this book is is a nightmare. Badly laid out, with no map of the city overall making it difficult to understand where you are. The restaurants that were tried in Bracciano were both disappointing. The shopping section was also poor - the major shopping mall at the termini was no more than you would get at the airport. Poorly written over complicated - the book lost its credibility and therfore ending up in the bin before it completey ruined our holiday. Do not buy!!

I purchased this book for a recent trip to Italy and I couldn't have done without it. The menu reader was excellent as was the section on travel. Many Italians were just impressed I tried. Many of the words were also put into useful phrases and the more difficlt words were spelt out phonetically for ease of pronunciation. I would reccomend it for any trip around Italy.
