I have just returned from a month+ backpacking in Tunisia and found this guide to be invaluable. Excellent recommendations and fascinating background conveys the love of the country from genuine travellers. Even though this edition was a few years out of date, everything was pretty much spot-on, although note that the train to Tozeur is up and running again (even the more dull Lonely Planet 2007 ed. about Tunisia was out of date on this one!). Take it with you and enjoy...

The first edition was rather better. It was better laid out and easier to read. The typeface in the new edition is smaller, the maps are smaller, and my subjective impression is that material on the main sites, Leptis and Sabratha, is less extensive than it was. Frankly it should be rather more extensive! Otherwise it is reasonably up to the standard of most such guides, although I concur with the reviewer who said that it's erroneous in parts.

My first impression was that the author had been 'got at' by the Libyan authorities. I particularly noticed the omission of comments about hotels that would throw you out of your room unless you agreed to buy their foul-tasting evening meals have gone, for instance; or mention of sleepy ... We've just come back from honeymoon and used this book when we visited Cairo and particularly the incredible museum... the descriptions are spot on and the book guides you thru' room by room. Our tour guide was saying practically the same things as the book, so its all you need!

Dress codes for women in Cairo aren't as strict as the book makes it out to be, there were loads of girls with string tops and shorts, so long skirts and long sleeved shirts aren't necessarily a must!! Other than that, pretty accurate about local customs and traditions.

I am planning a trip to Algeria in the next few months and was pleased to see that Lonely planet had at last produced a comprehensive guide to the country. For me it is concise and very readable but better than that I gave it to my Algerian boyfriend who read it from cover to cover. He confirms that the books is interesting and accurate.

The book covers not only tourist trails but the history of the country including the tragic war with France, the food and art. This is the essential book for travel to this part of the world - indeed I believe it is the only book.

This is an excellent book for the first-time visitor to Tunisia, both for the package-tour holidaymaker or the independent traveller.

The book is divided up into easy-to-read sections, covering must-see places, resorts and Tunisian culture, as well as the all-important food, drink and shopping.

It won't take up much room in your suitcase, and it is a bargain price for a travel book. However if you need a map, you will need to buy this separately.

I have visited Istanbul around nine times and Izmir about seven. This guide will really take you to the wrong hotels and restaurants. The cultural guide is ok despite a rather boring layout, esp. maps. But the restaurant suggestions are disasterous: where do you find Istanbul's best gourmet, Corne d'Or, or the intellectual bastion Yakup 2, or the best chicken and mezes in Istanbul (Hanedan), or the nostalgic charm of Istanbul's 1930's belle epoque (Rejans)? Instead mediocre places are recommended which will give the dogmatic reader a mediocre holiday. Also, Lonely Planet does not mention the new hotel in Izmir (Crowne Plaza Izmir) which receives raving critics. Does it not know of it yet? And no mention of restaurants like Bonjour, British Grill ... Read More:
