Having just come back from Honduras and the bay islands last week, i and the group with me wouldn't have gotten around so easily without the lonely panet guide. Some of the info is a bit out of date, and something strange has happened to the economy over there in the last 6 months but its mainly accurate. Lots of information for the traveller.

Recommendations......
Copan de Ruinas, go to the hotel Iguana Azul, quaint and friendly little hostel with private rooms.
The mayan ruins are cool, but dont walk from the town, get a tut tut taxi, very cute and cheap.

Gracius has some nice hot springs to visit.

Roatan, west end. Stay at Burkes place, nice old man runs it , eat mangos from a mango tree. ... Read More:

This guide proved to be a very useful companion during our trip to Guatemala in August 2006, and was very strong on hotels (we found some amazing places around lake Atitlan)and eating options. The maps were great and bus and shuttle connections useful and generally accurate. Check out the photo section for a good introduction to Guatemala - a wonderful country, allowing us to pick and choose from the highlights suggested.

Tikal was very well covered, with tons of historical info. In fact that is the real strength of this guide - very complete coverage of Guatemala's Maya sites.

After using the Lonely Planet's 'South East Asia on a Shoestring' I was sceptical of buying another of LP's guides. However for some reason I found myself with 'Central America on a Shoestring' and it actually turned out to be a very handy travel companion. The information was up to date (probably as we somehow managed to be one of the first people to get our hands on it) and the writers remained nicely neutral to cater for various ages and travel desires. Definitely recommended.

A fabulous LP guide to a fabulous country. Thorough, accurate and honest reviews of everything and anything. AND, unlike other lonely planets, there is a wicked sense of humour and healthy cynicism. These guys dont take themselves too seriously!! Highly recommended.

If you are familiar with the Lonely Planet series you know what this book is about, and as with the other LP guides I found it very helpful during my trip. Lots of great info for the traveler who likes to explore off the beaten path and the economy minded traveler. Very helpful info concerning the ruin sites. Made my hole trip great! The only sad part was my visit to Playa Del Carmen. Last time I was there was over ten years ago when it was a small village with unpaved streets, now it has grown into a small version of Cancun. Oh! one other bit of advice, If your into the ruin sites you must read John Loyd Stevens books.

Since my original review I have to add a recommendation: TOURIST IN THE YUCATAN cool thriller set in the Yucatan!
