This is a good guide book, as all the guide books in the series, but I did expect a bit more from it. I travelled around Italy together with my husband the summer of 2005, and we used this guide book a lot. But it is a guide book, nothing more. There are quite a bit of things that have changed since the book was last edited, but this is expected. We are planning to send the findings we did to the editor, so that it can be added or changed in the next edition, perhaps. We felt that the book focused too much on churches, castles etc, and a lot of really interesting things were missed - like the local food markets, which we love to visit. I usually travel with LP so maybe I am a little biased but I did find this book up to their normally high standards. The legendary confusion of Venice's allyways meant I was wary of this book's maps (esp considering LP's less than perfect record in that regard). However I was pleasantly surprised and in 4 days in the city did not get lost using them. It was a little annoying the way they were split across several pages but i guess that was necessary to acheive the accuracy. The tips to the sights and the walking tours were exellent. The restaurant and shopping sections were ok. I cant comment on the hotels section as I was in an apartment. The prices (on everything) and some of the transport details were out ... Read More:

..instead of having to pay through the nose for a copy in a Sienese bookshop. As ever, LP guides have the feeling of being written by someone who's actually been there, and the advice on San Gimignano (get there early or go in Winter) would have been worth it alone. This is an excellent guide, especially if - like us - you were roaming over both regions during your holiday. Highly recommended

After recently arriving home from a fantastic trip to Florence (Siena and Pisa), I must say how positively useful my husband and I found this guide. It gave us up to date information on the best locations to visit (away from the tourist trail), information on the best times to visit important places of interest (with helpful hints) and, most important of all, where to dine. We didn't have a bad meal! We also found the walks listed, very useful. All in all, this was a fantstic guide and well worth the money! Thanks Lonely Planet!!
