I bought the 4th edition (2006) of this book, not as a travel companion, but to help me decide whether to take a trip to California. The hotel prices are more up to date now, and this is one factor which was important to me as one of my aims in reading this book was to assess the cost of a possible trip. I found the introductory sections on Environment, History and Culture really interesting, I think the thoroughness of the background information is one of the areas in which LP excel. I looked at the practicalities - food, transport, etc., and I read the sections on San Francisco and the National Parks. found it much more useful then the time out NYC guidebook. Went to a couple of suggested bars which were fun. the pull out map is particularly useful. However, NYC is a city you want to get lost in so don't get the guidebook out too often!

I am a big fan of Lonely planet books and have plenty of them on my selves. But this was probably the worst one that I have from them. I found that there was not really enough information about what to do, see and find in all of the casinos and that there was too much information which I personally found unuseful and unhelpful. The best part of the book was the history of Vegas, which I found very interesting. I would actually say that if you are going to Vegas that you probably don't even need such a book. There is so much in all of the Casinos that after 4 days we did not see no where near all of the free things, let along the other things which you can pay to see (the dolphins in the Mirage for example). These Eyewitness Guides are great. You get huge amounts of information, tips and ideas for a relatively small book. The information is well researched and sound, the pictures relavant and stunning and the whole book is small enough to fit in your pocket to carry around with you.

We are planning a fly-drive trip to the USA and we have been looking for information/things to do in places.We initially looked at the Foders books but then stumbled across this book. What a fantastic informative book, the only problem with having this book is we need to book a longer holiday !!! It is excellent value for money and a must have for fly-drive touring of the USA.
