If there were no other road atlases of Ireland I could tell you that the maps in this atlas are up to date and accurate and be done with it. However as there are others to compare it with we can afford to expect a bit more than that. The problem is, put simply, this is not Ireland's clearest mapping. The web of white minor roads on a white background is wearing on the eyes. The picking out the network of secondary `R' roads in fluorescent yellow makes the maps look garish. There is no indication of terrain except little triangles indicating the position of hill summits.

There are a good selection of town plans, but they are tiny things with the details shown too small making them hard to read. My test is this, if I was a tired tourist ... Read More:

I have just returned from a tour of southern Ireland and I used this atlas with no problems at all. It has a full page map of Ireland inside the front cover and then four pages to show more detailed areas before the pages detailing final 3.2 inches to the mile maps. On the inside of the rear cover are distances between major towns in both kilometres and miles and a full index of town. Local attractions are marked and described and there are street plans of a number of the major towns and cities.
Great value!

This atlas is very good on the minor roads (L roads) of Ireland however it has some major failings. It is very frustrating when trying to find tourist sites such as the tombs and hillforts of the Burren, co. Clare. They are either absent altogether or marked in the wrong place. Most of the houses open to the public in Wicklow are missed off plus all sorts of other basic tourist stuff is missing. The position of the golf courses are accurate though, so even if you don't like golf they at least can help you to find yourself! In trying to make labelling clear, names of towns are sometimes so far from where they actually are that you can think they are on another road altogether. The small towns of Kerry are represented by a single white blob and what ... Read More:

This book is terrible, the directions are vague in the extreme with no distances or times mentioned between landmarks so when it says 'take right fork' you had better hope there is only 1... On the walk we tried there wasnt! Nice information about the flora and fauna which is great but not at the expense on directional detail.

I wonder if the authors of this book actually did the walk as some of the directions are also contradictory. In the end it turned an attempt at a walk into a massively frustrating random tramp including much backtracking and restarting before giving up and going home!

This book did manage to find itself one place... THE BIN!

On the plus side, the Eyewitness guide is easy to read and gives you a more accurate idea of what to expect at the various attractions across Ireland, and has a decent section on Northern Ireland, which is often noticeably lacking in many other guides. However, it is VERY limited in terms of its listings of lodgings, restaurants and pubs. I bought the guide while living in my husband's native Northern Ireland on the recommendation of a friend, but found I had to continually refer to other guide books to find hotels, B&B and restaurants that normal people (those of us with incomes under $100,000/year) can afford. Also, the listing of hotels, etc., at the back of the book is rather frustrating, as you have to flip back and forth many times to determine if there's ... Read More:

This is a large book- over 1000 pages, and it aims to be a single, comprehensive guide to Britain. It begins with a section on travel advice such as tips about safety, information about currency and safety and information about travelling to Britain and within Britain. Basically, information for before you travel. But I would question the appeal of this kind of printed material. All this information can be found out quite easily online, and online sources are naturally much more up to date.

In the intro, and throughout the book, they make remarkable generalisations. "English pubs general..." " The British public usually..." I hope people don't take this too seriously!

Also this book is not re-written, it is simply updated. As such some sections are ... Read More:

Good map, very durable
Only thing is Ireland is split in half over the 2 sides so can be a little confusing if you are driving by yourself and are trying to read it.
