Whilst travelling through Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Paragruay and Brazil, I quickly realised that this book was not going to be much help 'in the field'. It is in urgent need of up dating; many of the hostels and hotels mentioned have either closed, renamed or vanished off the face of the earth. I used this guide to plan my trip, but upon arrival it did little more than fill up space in my rucksack. The maps are quite useful...to a point. Most of the restaurants, hostels etc are not in the right place on the map (which i found out to my cost when lugging my rucksack around Ascunsion). However, the layout is accurate and helps to orientate yourself around cities.

and the best guide I've come across for India. Packed with detail and a reasonable cultural/ historical introduction. Maps are great, the timetables are pretty accurate, the opening times and prices are correct...

There are some very bad LP guides out there. Vietnam springs to mind. But LP India has been consistently good throughout the years. I think I've used 4 versions of the guidebook and have been pleased with the improvements everytime.

Obviously the negativities are that it is pretty big but how else are you supposed to cram in all that information.

I have just returned from china in which i spent three months there teaching and travelling. This was my first time travelling and the book was fantastic!! Alot of details and information for even the obscurest places in china. There was only one place i visted that wasn't in the lonely planet. It helped with language barrier aswell due to a lot of the places i went to were in chinese characters in the book. I will stick with the lonely planet guides when I travel in the future. Also much better than rough guide!

Previous editions of this book have been criticised for focusing too much on mid range and expensive places to sleep and eat whilst leaving out cheaper, more budget-orientated options. This edition (14th) is aimed at restoring the balance slightly, and from what I can see it appears to be an improvement. There are a lot of guidebooks for Australia on the market so it is just a matter of finding one that is to your taste, but this one is definitely full of comprehensive information for your trip.

Lonely Planet is in general known for not updating their books much and the kiwi version is tragic.
I got it when it was just 'updated' and none of the prices, the hostels and the attractions were updated. Half the placed had closed, had doubled in price or were in fact a completely different attraction, than what it says.
Going to NZ you don't need a travelguide. Buy a car (don't pay more than NZ$2500 for a old van) and just go. There are not many roads, you can't get lost.
Attractions are easy to review at local i-sites and they provide correct information.
Have a great trip!

This book covers Bangkok and the Centre and East (Issan) side of Northern Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Yunnan in China.

This is a very good loop for travelers who are going to be doing this circuit around Southeast Asia.

The book is too condensed for my liking though. The book is small and lightweight (about 1/2 size of the Thailand guide book) but with that compromises have had to be made. It therefore seems to be similar in content to the Southeast Asia guidebook for the areas it covers. I would have preferred the book to be the size of the larger guides and covered more detail.

The are also some quirks with the book. Although the sections (countries) have a similar look and feel there are major information emissions ... Read More:

I'm planning a trip to both Australia and New Zealnd, and this was the only book I could find that had them both in the same book - saves all that extra weight in the luggage. It's a good, comprehensive guide listing most of the popular travel destinations as well as some off the beaten track. There are plenty of maps - especially of the major cities, with close up maps of key areas within the cities.

The book has guides for each place: eating, drinking, sleeping, sightseeing, how to get there, how to get around etc. It's got a lot of web addresses so you can do further research if you need to.

The book is aimed at people travelling on the cheap so is full of useful advice and tips. I thought this guide was an excellent buy.
