"Desiring Italy" became my inseparable travelling companion across Italy, after I found it by chance at a Roman bookstore. Not only it suggests special places to visit that are not always listed in traditional guides, it also makes them alive through their portrayal by literary masters (all women) that add their elegance, their sensitivity, their intelligence to that of the readers'. An added bonus was that I got to make their literary works real in my mind by following the steps of the characters in these magnificent settings (as Dorothea in "Middlemarch", for example).

Thoroughly enjoyable read. I find Annie Hawes impressive in the extreme in that she really knows her subject and her reader! I loved my travels with her but sadly missed the de Giglio family and all her Italian friends. I learned an awful lot about women of Islam and how they cope with the extremes of this religion. Annie presents a book which is humourous and yet holds the dignity of the way of life and customs of the land she travels in.

The 3rd of Annie Hawes books, this one sees her and her Calabrese fidanzato heading south to his ancestrial home of Calabria. A great book and I love that you feel that you know the whole family. Being half Calabrese, and having a Calabrese fidanzato myself I really could appreciate all she was writing about.
All 3 of her books are my all time favourites.

A classic, if somewhat dated, account of some Italian regions that are hardly discussed in the mountain of books on Italy. Morton's style ties both a narrative description with historical anecdotes, probably familiar to those who have read his other books. The book was very helpful in planning a trip through Calabria, Basilicata, Puglia, and Campania.

Experience the adventure of exploring one's family roots in a small village in southern Italy: taste the food, kiss the relatives, explore the terrain, climb the mountains, visit the castles, learn the history (Greeks, Bruttians, Romans, Visigoth conquests) ... The village, Gimigilano, is located in Calabria, the region that looks like the foot on a map of Italy, which everyone knows resembles a boot. The author, Mark Rotella, describes his very *first* visit to this village with his father and later subsequent visits either alone or with his wife, who is of Engish and Dutch heritage. He captivates the reader with descriptions of nostalgia and heart-felt longing when he emotionally connects to the traditions, customs and life of the village. He is befriended by ... Read More:

The urge to escape the comforts, routine and refinements of our living conditions to somewhere more challenging, primitive and raw is something that many of us feel - especially those who read books. The books we read can sometimes stimulate the urge, sometimes satisfy it. All I ask of such books is that the author can write well and that he is not boastful.

Eric Newby, especially in "A Small Place in Italy", meets these requirements admirably. Indeed, he ranks for me as a travel writer of near genius. He was almost 50 years old when he and his Italian born wife Wanda took up permanent residence in a ruined farmhouse in northern Italy. His account of the trials and tribulations that followed, the neighbours and the locality, is told in this wonderfully ... Read More:

Many people will have seen Matthew Fort on Great British Menu or read his Guardian columns over the years. His passion for food is totally infectious. And behind his affable demeanour is a sharp mind, wonderful eye for detail and delightfully involving use of language. On this journey around Sicily he also shows an awful lot of himself. It is a very personal journey. It shows not only a sense of the history of the places he visits, it also tells a lot about his own self; his family relationships, his strength of character, his willingness to engage anyone and everyone in his quest. You sense how hard such a journey is; the loneliness of several weeks on a scooter, the uncertainty of what you will find. This is a rare book as it is readable for so many reasons: as ...
