"Desiring Italy" became my inseparable travelling companion across Italy, after I found it by chance at a Roman bookstore. Not only it suggests special places to visit that are not always listed in traditional guides, it also makes them alive through their portrayal by literary masters (all women) that add their elegance, their sensitivity, their intelligence to that of the readers'. An added bonus was that I got to make their literary works real in my mind by following the steps of the characters in these magnificent settings (as Dorothea in "Middlemarch", for example).

Thoroughly enjoyable read. I find Annie Hawes impressive in the extreme in that she really knows her subject and her reader! I loved my travels with her but sadly missed the de Giglio family and all her Italian friends. I learned an awful lot about women of Islam and how they cope with the extremes of this religion. Annie presents a book which is humourous and yet holds the dignity of the way of life and customs of the land she travels in.

The 3rd of Annie Hawes books, this one sees her and her Calabrese fidanzato heading south to his ancestrial home of Calabria. A great book and I love that you feel that you know the whole family. Being half Calabrese, and having a Calabrese fidanzato myself I really could appreciate all she was writing about. All 3 of her books are my all time favourites.

A classic, if somewhat dated, account of some Italian regions that are hardly discussed in the mountain of books on Italy. Morton's style ties both a narrative description with historical anecdotes, probably familiar to those who have read his other books. The book was very helpful in planning a trip through Calabria, Basilicata, Puglia, and Campania.
