I bought this book as a gift for my English boyfriend as we are planning to visit my native Madrid soon and I thought it would be a good idea for him to get a humorous introduction to the city from a fellow brit's point of view.

After reading it, I am not sure that I can subject him to it. The author does not try to hide his distaste for tabloid-type magazines, but his own book consists of a collection of names that would usually only be found in those very magazines. More often than not, the name dropping exercise does not lead to even an anecdote or story, basically there is no point to it; and if you are not spanish or leaving in Spain, you won't even get who they are talking about.

The stories are not well developed ... Read More:

Autobiographies about out of control rockstars are ten a penny, similar books about "normal" people far less common. The reason for that is pretty simple I guess, we aspire to our dreams and wishes...and with the best will in the world I don't wanna work on a rig. Never the less Paul Carters book is a pretty good read, he wizzes around the world and keeps things snappy, even if the claims on the cover are a little exagerated - taken hostage...er where?. He's no crazy Keith Moon character either, its the situation rather than the personality thats amusing here.
A good, but slight, read.

First and foremost this is a very well written book. The characterisation is superb, and the way the author describes the way that she slowly gets drawn into rural Mallorcan life is nothing short of enchanting.

However perhaps the most accomplished part of the book is the way that the author views her other life in the PR business in London.

As someone who loves to read the stories of people who have moved to rural Spain and Mallorca it is this flitting back and forth between the author's previous life in London and new life in Mallorca that makes the book both unique and captivating.

Highly recommended.

I felt like I was reading a series of articles (well that's what Tremlett does for his day job!) rather than a book, so I never really got into it. I tried a couple of times, but I have to say I never finished the book - at about the 1/2 way mark I used it to raise my reading lamp and that's where it remains.

I really enjoyed this fast moving and thoroughly amusing tale. Alex has painted a vivid and fascinating picture of life for a brave but innocent couple buying their first property in Spain. The succession of difficult but hilarious situations and her perception and description of all the colourful characters involved kept me riveted to the end.

I only gave this book 1 star as there isn't an option to give it less. I've read other books about the airline industry but none as bad as this. Gary is extremely homophobic, you have to wonder why Virgin employed him in the first place. Whoever typed the book for him needs to go back to school and learn how to type, a four year old could do better. I read the first 3 chapters and decided that it was only fit for the fire.

For the most part, this book is entertaining and witty. Maconie's enthusiam for his subject is contagious and the stuff you are learning is genuinely interesting. Then he stops writing about Lancashire and starts on Yorkshire.

I can't help but think that this book would have been better if Maconie had stuck to what he knows, ie: the west side of the Pennines. Quite how, for example, he can make various claims about 'professional Yorkshiremen' (a dying breed anyway) and deny the existence of the Lancastrian equivalent is an unforgivable oversight that kind of gives away where Maconie's loyalties lie. They are not called 'professional Lancastrians' as such, but how many 'professional Scousers' and 'professional Mancs' could we name? Is Stuart Maconie's beloved Peter ... Read More:

This is my favourite of all the Babylon series.

I read it whilst lazing on a sun lounger in a 5 Star resort in Dubai with lots of Russians around, flashing the cash. Although I wasn't on a Maldivian Island, whilst reading the book, I slipped into fantasy land and became one of the Rich and Famous visitors to the amazing hotel depicted in this book.

Another triumph by Imogen.
