Morton's style ties both a narrative description with historical anecdotes, probably familiar to those who have read his other books. The book was very helpful in planning a trip through Calabria, Basilicata, Puglia, and Campania.

You actually feel little for the author and his wife. There is no sense of real adventure or challenge in what they are doing. Her family lives in Vico. She speaks Italian. The author himself rarely needs to reference an Italian phase book to communicate. The setting is also misleading. Although Vico is set inland in the Gargano, there is no mention to the fact that the area is one big tourist trap and not as remote as Ian would make it seem. What is obvious is that both didn't bother researching buying a property abroad, not only in Italy but their botched attempts at buying in France.
