I want to see more stars against this book, which is why I am typing this review. Having lived in Italy, I was searching for an authentic Italian cookbook and when this book was given to me by a discerning friend, I knew I had found what I was looking for. It is a real delight...so full of useful tips ...not just about the process of cooking the recipes but about the ingredients themselves. It is the book every Italian mother should hand on to her daughter! Those readers who may be put off by the lack of photos of the actual recipes should think again...Mary's recipes are delicious and foolproof. Italy on a plate! This is an extremely well written book and a great challenging read, both in terms of its highly perceptive intellectual "thrusts" and the author's fluid writing style, which makes for a highly enjoyable "read" in itself. It is true that it does contain typographical errors and also that at times, O'Hear comes close to being a "grumpy old philosopher". However, in my view, these minor issues do nothing to dilute what is, in effect, a set of excellent essays that challenge the comfortable, consensual and politically-correct moral relativism of Britain today, and the resultant intellectual and spiritual vacuity. I was given this book to read by a friend in England, and was totally taken by surprise - this is a wonderful book; vivid, truthful and entertaining.

Read this in one night after having put off reading it for months. It's a wonderful read and all the better for it being true and not over romanticised by the author, though I imagine it was a real labour of love. Inspirational and humbling at the same time, and really makes you question what you've achieved in your own little life. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

I write as a cook who enjoys actually reading cookery books, not just cooking from them. In comparision with Tessa's other books this one has turned out to be less enjoyable. The publishers should take note: The simple fact that the ingredients are not arranged vertically makes it more difficult to grasp the recipe as a whole, it's not as amusing when just flicking through the book for inspiration! I don't know why but it does give the impression that Tessa hurried through Portugal just to write this book, there's no soul to it if one could say that. That said, the book as a whole is beautifully published, the photographs amazing and I have tried Pasteis de Nata, very good!

Matthew Fort's epic scooter ride up the thigh-boot of Italy is a truly delicious read. Every aspect of the fascinating and varied Italian life he encountered is amusingly reflected upon in his lightly erudite prose.
