Well, having returned from a two week tour of Sardinia, we feel rather let down by this lonely planet. This book provides some good historical information about the island, however it feels rather repetitive throughout and the space could be better used to provide travelers with the information that would improve their stay. Sardinia has some magnificent inland and coastal sights, towns, and places to stay, but the lonely planet took us to some areas of Sardinia which when we arrived, we sat wondering why the resort had been listed. We also found some absolute gems which were only mentioned in passing and had we not been willing to venture off the beaten track we would have missed them. I like this book very much and found it to be an invaluable resource. To get the best out of it you need to read it well before you go and maybe take one of the new generation guide books with you as well. Until recently guide books about this intriguing destination were hard to find so we have used the Rough Guide for several years and we have not been disappointed. As you would expect it is very strong on arrival at whichever port/airport you choose to come in at as well as transport and accommodation. The politics of Corsica are mystifying and this latest edition of The Rough Guide will bring you up to date with the situation to Jan 2003. Ok, so it's a road/tourist map of Sardinia, but what makes these GeoCentre EuroMaps extra special is the rating system they give to cultural locations and scenic landscapes. This is really handy when you want to know whether to head for town a or town b for dinner or to decide if that squirly road on the map is the scenic road or the road to hell. Easily the best map I've ever taken on holiday, and if you've been to Italy you'll know you need a map to find your way around. 1:200000 Legend in 8 European Languages.

This is THE WORST guide book in the world. Local people of Sicily seem to be the best guides for me. I spent a week in Sicily and every place I visited I would refer to this book. But all these pompous authors wrote were sarcastic and frankly insulting to Sicily. This guide completely avoids how beautiful the Aoelian Islands are, where each island is different and diverse and some with living volcanoes. The only benefit I got from this book was when I was quoting it with locals I met on my travels and at laugh how bad this book really is. Seriously, you can travel to Sicily armed with just a map and phrase book. I wished I did because this rough guide was heavy!
