This is a very basic and poorly written book. Half of this text is actually a license for copying and the factual content is very basic if not negligable. If you are looking for an interesting, well written book full of facts and stories then you want to avoid this one. What a dissapointment!

i have read pretty much every mafia book going and this was without a doubt the worst, most badly researched and least factual tome i have ever had the misfortune to pay for. there is no detail whatsoever. there are something like 72 chapters with so little detail in each it makes a mockery of the term true crime. no mention of why and how casso was thrown out of the witness protection programme or any detailed analysis of his own court case. no index either and that tells you all you need to know about a so called non-fiction true account. full of simple errors, non sequiturs and cliches. perhaps gaspipe himself had final copy approval because there is no other explanation for the blatant glossing over of all casso's degeneracy. ... I like reading about dedicated experts in a particular field. In this case, Judges Falcone and Borsellino, and others, taking on the mafia. It really is an interesting, shocking and moving story.

This is actually one of the books on the Mafia you SHOULD get. The main strong point being it's ability to explain the background of the mafia. It's also well written, this is good "story telling". If you get this you should complement it with "Excellent Cadavers" by Alexander Stille. Together they give you enough information to navigate further. Both of them deal with the Sicilian mafia, but concentrate on different periods.
