I knew nothing about the Mitfords before borrowing this book from my mum. I found it highly compelling, especially all the references to the many influential and varied people of the 20th century. It is also very sad at times, especially the harsh realities of the passage of time. This collection of letters has been carefully chosen to tell the reader the Mitfords' story but in the words of the girls themselves.

Charles Nicholl's books about Marlowe and da Vinci have previously graced my reading list: the first is a meticulous reconstruction of Marlowe's final meal in an attempt to explain the playwright's death, which is sometimes a little repetitive; the second a more conventional biography of the renaissance polymath.

The Lodger is closer to the first, in being a depiction of how Shakespeare possibly lived whilst in London, centring on a single event, the signing of a legal deposition by the playwright which concerned his landlord, but fortunately without the repetitiousness.

So little is actually known about the bard that to say it is amazing nobody did this before is an understatement, but it is a tribute to Nicholl that he ... Read More:

If you have never heard about this Archduke Wilhelm do not get worried. He is indeed just a small fish in the big pond of European history from WWI to WWII. But he is an excellent to tool to demonstrate the developments in the Austrian Empire and the whole of Europe, especially with focusing on Eastern Europe.

Timothy Snyder is a respected scholar of this period of time and area of Europe. The reader is suddenly focused on the developments in Poland and Ukraine and there position in the European concert. Very interesting indeed. He tries to show how members of the Habsburg family tried to come to terms with the development of the time and to find a new role in this changing environment for themselves. Archduke Wilhelm serves as a pars pro toto and ... Read More:

It's hard to say whether George Clooney is making this sort of movie nowadays to cast himself against type or, given that he seems to be doing quite a few like this, that he is re-inventing himself away from the pretty boy nice guy image that has served him well so far.

Michael Clayton is a downbeat tale of corporate America and the dodgy wheelings and dealings that go on behind the scenes. The focus is on a troubleshooter (Uncle George) who works for a law firm retained by a very rich farming company that has been up to no good and subsequently stand to loose billions if found guilty. Their chief lawyer appears to have gone off his rocker though and so Michael Clayton is braught in to put it right.

In actual fact however, the lawyer in ... Read More:

6.The Private Patient (Adam Dalgliesh Mystery) by: P.D. James

It's amazing how PD James has managed to keep up a steady stream of excellent novels featuring Adam Dalgliesh. I think they are more novels than crime fiction as the detection of the murders is peripheral to the exploration of the characters and their interactions. Her writing style is quite complex with long sentences and many characters to keep track of and, in my experience, better suited to be read than heard as an audio book (of which I have some in this series).

The journey begins with Lev's bus journey from his home in Poland to the loneliness of impersonal London. Lev is into his early forties, has recently lost his wife to cancer and believes that the only way that he can support his very young daughter and his mother is to find himself a job in London. His life-long friend, who supposedly knows such things, has told Lev that he should be able to get by in London on £20 a week. The truth becomes apparent within 24 hours of his arrival at Victoria Bus Terminus when he finds out how much it's going to cost for one night's B&B.

During the bus journey, Lev has struck up a friendship with a female teacher who already has good contacts in London. Throughout the book, this lady comes to Lev's rescue in times of trouble. Unsurprisingly, ... Read More:

A great little novel - apparently a fragment found by her children. Its fragmentariness shows, but it's not worse for that. Small but perfectly formed, and I thought it was better than Suite Francaise.

I won't give a synopsis since this has already been done ably by other reviewers. Why this autobiography 'worked' for me is that Mr Ballard has reflected his past experiences to his present situation so movingly, and with characteristic modesty. As a young man he considered his unusual childhood to be of little interest to anyone; only late on in his life has it provided him with explicit material for fiction - and now, with this account - for fact - only latterly has he recognised that he had unconsciously used his childhood experiences as literary motifs.

Judging by his enthusiasm that came through in the middle part of the book, I suspect that Mr Ballard derived most satisfaction in his life from raising his three children on his own following the tragic death of his wife whilst ... Read More:
