I bought this book a few years ago for my first trip to the Dolomites; I could only find this and one other Dolomite Via Ferrata book in English. I found this book a Godsend; informative, well laid out with maps, photos, cross reference indexes, useful telephone number and local information. This made my first Via Ferrata experience so much easier to plan and navigate. I have since done a couple more trips and this book and Volume 2 have been my guides and are well thumbed. I would recommend this book to anyone planning a Via Ferrata trip to the Dolomites whether a novice or seasoned ferraterist.

This book helped greatly in finding walks in areas outside of the part of the Dolomites that we know best. Its not step by step detail and assumes some competence on the part of the user; thats fine because I need suggestions and a gentle steer, not hand holding. On return from Italy there were a small number of quibbles concerning changes in signage and other details that we had noticed along the way that we notified to Cicerone. We were very surprised to be contacted by the author to discuss the points raised. That's customer service and its very clear that its a guide written by an enthusiast: you can't want more.

I've used this book on 2 trips I organised to the Dolomites, and found it to be excellent, lots of walks, many of which can be completed in a day. If you planning a trip, it's a must buy. You need to buy the Tabacco maps mentioned at the start of each walk, in order to get the most from the book.

This was our second time on a via ferrata holiday. The first time was in the Dolomites in Italy with guides so this time we decided to go solo with this book and do some camping, The book is very good to get an idea of what to expect and plot a rough plan of where to go and what level of climbs you want to do, but you WILL need to source more information before you set off to a climb. On thing we did find very hard was finding the climbs. I would highly suggest getting yourself a sat nav and getting the gps co-ordinates off via-ferrata.fr. The directions in the book are incredibly vague and will leave you driving round in circles for hours. So all in all don't just rely on this book, do lots of planning, search the web ... Read More:

I walked the Alta Via 1 this summer in late August/early September. Martin Collins' book is an essential item if you intend to do this fantastic high-altitude trek. The profiles are fairly accurate, and the routes are very well described. The only criticism I had with the book is that some of the timings are ambitious to say the least (I am a very fit, a rower at university) and I have severe problems at keeping up with some of the timings, yet some of the timings I could easily beat. Apart from that, the advice is completely sound (except the bus to Lago di Braines does not leave from Villabassa train station). This is a good guide book, as all the guide books in the series, but I did expect a bit more from it. I travelled around Italy together with my husband the summer of 2005, and we used this guide book a lot. But it is a guide book, nothing more. There are quite a bit of things that have changed since the book was last edited, but this is expected. We are planning to send the findings we did to the editor, so that it can be added or changed in the next edition, perhaps. We felt that the book focused too much on churches, castles etc, and a lot of really interesting things were missed - like the local food markets, which we love to visit. There wasn't much of "different" or "special" recommendations, it was just focusing on the "What to see if ... Read More:

It's a great idea to collect the best ridges in Scotland into one book and it turns out there isn't space for them all in this one book - the appendix lists another 40 odd (mainly climbs). The book is written with a marvelous energy and joie de vivre that really draws you in; the maps are great and the photos too. It's a lovely book. I am a walker, not a climber, and, despite the subtitle, there are many routes in here suitable for reasonably experienced hillwalkers with a good head for heights. Do the winter routes as summer walks and Creise, Ring of Steall, Aonach Eagach, Liathach and many others become accessible to us mortals. We've been coming to the Dolomites (to visit relatives) for years and have always found this book by some distance the most useful, with contact information for all the refuges, as well as some precise trail descriptions and great maps. Although we've only used it for some of their short walks so far, we're hoping to start on the AV1 this summer and again, while planning, find this book just invaluable! Great stuff!!!
