What this book totally fails to mention is that Bologna totally shuts down for most of August!

Most shops, many bars and some resturants all have signs on locked shutters explainig that the owners (it seems that most of the businesses are family run) have departed, en mass, for their annual holiday.

Bigger tourist attractions such as the excellent tower are still open but many of the shops mentioned in the book are shut up until late August / early September.

The city is still very nice, albeit quite, during this period and you should be able to find nice resturants but don't expect to do much in the way of shopping.

Judging from the other reveiws you either "get" this book or you don't. I've read it four times and think it quite wonderful; it even made me laugh out loud in several places. It certainly pays re-reading to pick up what you missed first time round.
Yes, it's a fairly hopeless plot for a detective novel. Yes, the central character is largely disinterested in the action and wanders off-stage for large sections of the book; and yes, "cardboard cut-out" can describe more than one of the central characters. But that is the whole point.
The parodies and subversions tumble over each other, and when they don't quite work - as sometimes happens - the book seems really to be sticking its tongue out at itself in the mirror.

There seems to be only 2 or 3 books around which cover this region of Italy in any detail. This one is clearly written with the most passion and genuine local knowledge.

The historical background to the region is very detailed and, for a travel guide, not too dry. The suggestions the writers make e.g. places to eat, historical buildings, markets, I have always found to be accurate and trustworthy. The book is laid out intuitively too, starting in the west and working east through the region making places easy to locate.

I think the key to really enjoying this region is exploring. This guide makes good suggestions but I've usually found there's quite a lot more to discover than this book lets on. Perhaps that's a good thing. ... Read More:

This is a good guide book, as all the guide books in the series, but I did expect a bit more from it. I travelled around Italy together with my husband the summer of 2005, and we used this guide book a lot. But it is a guide book, nothing more. There are quite a bit of things that have changed since the book was last edited, but this is expected. We are planning to send the findings we did to the editor, so that it can be added or changed in the next edition, perhaps.
We felt that the book focused too much on churches, castles etc, and a lot of really interesting things were missed - like the local food markets, which we love to visit. There wasn't much of "different" or "special" recommendations, it was just focusing on the "What to see if you ... Read More:
