I decided to read "Venice" in preparation for a week-long stay in the Italian city.

Broken into three sections -- The People, The City, The Lagoon -- "Venice" is not a chronological history of the city but a meandering look at its past, present and future. Nor is it a guidebook, although it does contain a mine of information about what to see and where to go.

I think "The Times" probably described it best when they said it was "a classic love letter to Italy's most iconic city", because it is, indeed, a beautiful missive dripping with exquisite descriptions. I found it an enormously engaging and evocative read by an accomplished writer who really knows how to string a simile or two together. For example: "Venice is ... Read More:

This review refers to the 2003 Penguin edition, which consists of what had been two separate books issued in 1977 and 1981 respectively, namely "Venice: The Rise to Empire" and "Venice: The Greatness and Fall". Both books had been combined into one volume by Penguin in 1983. (For those wanting details of the city's history after 1797, John Julius Norwich has produced a quasi-successor volume, "Paradise of Cities: Venice and Its Nineteenth Century Visitors", but, as its title indicates, this is as much concerned with prominent outsiders than with the city itself.)

Since the one-volume history was published in 1983, there has been no revision of the text; neither has there been an update of the bibliography nor the writing of a new introduction. ... Read More:

There are a number of editions of Ruskin's classic work: this is a review of the Penguin Classic History edition (originally published in 1960), reprinted in 2001. It is edited and abridged from the original three volumes of 450,000 words by Venice and Canaletto scholar, the late J.G. Links, who lauds Ruskin as "one of the greatest teachers - of anything - of all time."

Links points out that Ruskin himself brought out an abridgement of his monumental work, but that this abridgement was itself unsatisfactory, omitting for example Ruskin's chapter on `The Nature of Gothic', the chapter that Kenneth Clark later said he could not read "without a thrill, without a sudden resolution to reform the world." But how much of an abridgement is this edition? ... Read More:

If you only take one guidebook to Venice, make sure it's this one. We took the 1st Edition along on our first trip to Venice last year and it changed a good holiday into an amazing experience.
There is a mouth-watering introductory section with guidance on what specialities to look out, very useful for a first timer. The main section reviews recommended bars, cafes and restaurants, usefully divided into geographical areas so you can easily plan an itinerary to fit in with sight-seeing. The enthusiasm of the authors for good food and for the city of Venice shines through on every page.
The reviews of bars and restaurants are completely honest and reliable, not only for the quality of food but also for the ambience and helpfulness of the staff. We ... Read More:

I started reading this just after a trip to Venice. I found the first chapter or so a struggle, my feeling is the translation from the Italian is a little odd and a number of times I had to re read sentences to work out what was being said.
However, I persisted and once i got used to the style I found the book evoked so many memories of the feel of Venice. It is not about the tourist sights, it tells you about the heart and soul of the city and as such I would recommend it to anyone who wants to dig below the gondolas and the glassware and get a little closer to what Venice is really about.

I've used this on two visits. And twice it's done it's job admirably. While I can't vouch for the accommodation section - we'd pre-booked - the info on the sights is thorough, though at times a little over the top. For example, the way the author drools over the view from the connecting bridge between Murano and Burano... if I'd written the book, that 'view' wouldn't even have deserved a mention. I prefer guides that tell it as it is - if something's truly outstanding, then I want to know; if it's merely something to see if you're passing, then I want to know I can skip it without being plagued by the thought I might have missed something spectacular. Some things, like Scoule Grande de Rocco (excuse the spelling, but I don't have the book to hand) was virtually deserted ... Read More:

A very, very good map of Venice, with lots on it. In fact, perhaps, too much. You have to read this map in advance of your trip - become adept at finding a grid reference for a restaurant, for example, or a "sight" if that's what you are on your way to see.
Good:
- the public transport routes are right, though not very obvious from the map, but there's an official "venice transport" map on the back.
- even the traghetto routes are right(a gondola ferry - E0.50 this year, 2008)
- "road" names are clear and easy to read, if you've got the right glasses on... you reach an age.....
- many reasonable restaurants/bars marked, but coded by cost, which means there are 20 or so entries marked as B on the map, the grid is crucial for this task
- the ... Read More:
