I've been teaching modern Greek for more than 10 years. This course book is not suitable for students who are serious about learning Greek. It's ok for those who, as tourists, want to be able to order a souvlaki in a greek taverna. I would be very suspicious of teachers of modern Greek who make use of this book. Very disappointing. I'd stick with the Communicate in Greek course books instead.

This introduction to Greek is a gem of a short course which lives up to the claim on the cover: "The ideal course for absolute beginners." It consists of a 128 page book and two cds. The cds are well integrated with the book and the course moves smoothly from one to the other (don't even think about getting the book only - the cds are an integral part of the course and add immeasurably to it). There are lots of short spoken exercises which help with learning and build confidence in speaking. The best way of using the course is carefully explained in the introduction and the page layouts are outstanding - very clear, all the Greek is highlighted and it is very easy to follow. This dictionary is great value for money. At 572 pages, it's large enough to mean that you probably won't ever find yourself needing to traslate a word that isn't included. It is my third Greek dictionary and by far and away the best (one is by Collins, the other I picked up in Cyprus). It's by no means a "pocket" dictionary, but still it is very portable. The font is fine; you don't have to squint, and the paper is a clean white, so there is a sharp contrast that makes the words very distinguishable. If you're going to buy a Greek dictionary, I advise you to get this one.

Unlike the other books I've read in the Teach Yourself "All Round Confidence" range, which have a good balance of dialogue, grammar, and exercises, this one is padded out with a lot of dialogue and seems to worry that we will run away if we see too much grammar. As an example, while we are treated to three pages and three conversations on how to say "How are you?", only a short paragraph is offered on the all-important and numerous word endings and participles from nominative, genitive, and accusative forms in Greek; seemingly we are expected to just pick the grammar up from the dialogues. I bought this originally for myself as I am studying French, German and Spanish (for fun would you believe) but it is so easy to learn that my 7 year old has it on her iPod and we are starting to have conversations. (I also speak to her in German at times and due to how easy these CD's are, she is able to have limited chats in that too.) There are some tunes in the background which phrases are laid over in time, and you hear them and lock them in your mind along with the tune. The guys voice is almost hypnotic and the woman who speaks with him is clear and easy to understand making it ultra easy to repeat and learn. This is an amazing item, I have tried many diferent techniques to learn Italian and this is by far the best. I really do encourage you to buy this you won't regret it. The voices used are really good as well, they saying everything clearly allowing you to understand quicker. The music is also an added bonus it allows the words to stick in your brain faster, and makes the experience alot more enjoyable. With this product its not a matter of having to use it, but you want to use it. Fantastic.

This is a CD release of a very old recording on tape. Orientated towards the American user. Many of the phrases would not be used by the modern traveller.

I bought this last week and it's brilliant - I've just ordered the second volume. It totally suits my way of learning and is very easy to use. it does work rapidly and is much more pleasnt to listen to than those dreadful CD's with mock conversations in them. i'm really enjoying using it. HIghly effective - would recommend! :)

As an absolute beginner I found this phrasebook perfect and made me far more confident in my attempts to speak Greek. The book's layout not only looks good but is logical and easy to use. Words are broken up phonetically making them relatively easy to pronounce. All eventualities appear to be catered for.Even if you don't intend to use it, the section on romance will provide some laughs as you read some of the phrases that are included. For those more adventurous there is even a section on grammar which is worth a read. In my opinion the best Greek phrasebook on the market

Perhaps I just don't learn this way. The music did nothing for me, and I can't think of any phrases "anchored into my long term memory". Perhaps I don't play it enough. The CD is fine if you want to learn stock phrases like "I would like to order...", "Have you got..." "Is there...." but what do you do when someone responds in German. I want to learn German so I can ask, understand the answer and respond. It will help you "get by" but not to have a conversation - go for broke and get Michel Thomas instead.
