Not only was this book helpful when choosing where to stay - information was accurate and relevant - it was also invaluable in terms of finding ways to save money (which is a must in Venice!).
But the best feature about this book was its information on the places to visit. It saved us a fortune because we didn't need to buy guide books for any of the venues!
The book is written with fascinating tidbits of information, many of which will make you smile and laugh, so be careful not to read in church if you're not prepared to stifle your laughter.

If I had to say one negative thing about this book, it would be that the entry fees are now very slightly out of date... but if you add 1 euro to the price in the book, you're ... Read More:

A very, very good map of Venice, with lots on it. In fact, perhaps, too much. You have to read this map in advance of your trip - become adept at finding a grid reference for a restaurant, for example, or a "sight" if that's what you are on your way to see.
Good:
- the public transport routes are right, though not very obvious from the map, but there's an official "venice transport" map on the back.
- even the traghetto routes are right(a gondola ferry - E0.50 this year, 2008)
- "road" names are clear and easy to read, if you've got the right glasses on... you reach an age.....
- many reasonable restaurants/bars marked, but coded by cost, which means there are 20 or so entries marked as B on the map, the grid is crucial ... Read More:

A brilliant companion for anyone thinking of going to Venice or for those people the author Judith Martin describes as Venetophiles.

Lots of gossipy history and facts run through the book and it's fun to dip into it to sate one's thirst.

Eight years ago on a week long trip to Venice,I was lucky enough to have a quick look inside one of the palazzi mentioned in the book (the one where Wagner composed some of Tristan and Isolde) . It's the Palazzo Brandolini and was "owned" or rented by the Rosekrans family. In fact, the author mentions going to a ball there.

I'm going next month and ideeed will not be staying at No Vulgar Hotel. Rented a sweet studio in a Palazzo on the GC bang opposite Byron's Mocegino! Will be taking ... Read More:

I decided to read "Venice" in preparation for a week-long stay in the Italian city.

Broken into three sections -- The People, The City, The Lagoon -- "Venice" is not a chronological history of the city but a meandering look at its past, present and future. Nor is it a guidebook, although it does contain a mine of information about what to see and where to go.

I think "The Times" probably described it best when they said it was "a classic love letter to Italy's most iconic city", because it is, indeed, a beautiful missive dripping with exquisite descriptions. I found it an enormously engaging and evocative read by an accomplished writer who really knows how to string a simile or two together. For example: "Venice is a cheek-by-jowl, back ... Read More:

8.Venice for Pleasure by: J.G. Links

 : Venice for Pleasure
This is a review of the revised seventh edition of 2000, "reprinted with revisions" in 2002. The work was originally published in 1966. It is a small oddly shaped book, in landscape format, which will fit into most coat pockets.

In his 52-page introduction, JG Links says that the book, "is a guide to the pleasures of Venice without its pains. Its simple object is to guide the reader to places he might otherwise miss and, having reached them, to tell him what he might wish to know and then leave him there to admire, to enjoy or, perhaps, to be disappointed." It is intended for (a) those who possess at least one other guide book; (b) those who are walkers; and (c) those who are in Venice to enjoy themselves. The last two of these criteria speak for themselves, ... Read More:

I've used this on two visits. And twice it's done it's job admirably. While I can't vouch for the accommodation section - we'd pre-booked - the info on the sights is thorough, though at times a little over the top. For example, the way the author drools over the view from the connecting bridge between Murano and Burano... if I'd written the book, that 'view' wouldn't even have deserved a mention. I prefer guides that tell it as it is - if something's truly outstanding, then I want to know; if it's merely something to see if you're passing, then I want to know I can skip it without being plagued by the thought I might have missed something spectacular. Some things, like Scoule Grande de Rocco (excuse the spelling, but I don't have the book to hand) was virtually deserted - maybe ... Read More:

I usually travel with LP so maybe I am a little biased but I did find this book up to their normally high standards.

The legendary confusion of Venice's allyways meant I was wary of this book's maps (esp considering LP's less than perfect record in that regard). However I was pleasantly surprised and in 4 days in the city did not get lost using them. It was a little annoying the way they were split across several pages but i guess that was necessary to acheive the accuracy.

The tips to the sights and the walking tours were exellent. The restaurant and shopping sections were ok. I cant comment on the hotels section as I was in an apartment.

The prices (on everything) and some of the transport details were out-of-date.

Overall I ... Read More:
