The Michelin maps are excellent. They are extremely detailed with a scale of 1 inch = 3.16 miles. With motorway exits and entrances for example, it's clearly marked in which directions they operate. It includes useful information like toll roads, petrol stations and even speed radar locations. I also like the insider information. Panoramic lookouts and scenic routes are all clearly indicated (the other regional maps that I considered didn't have this). However do be aware that unlike the broader regional Michelin maps, there are no indications of which towns and villages are of interest to tourists. (Although the Michelin Green series guidebooks list the map references for all places of interest).

This is essentially a regional ... Read More:

I'm planning to walk over the Pyrenees from Catalonia to the Midi this summer, and was looking for a good resource to give me a well-informed idea of possible starting points, finishes, distances and the natural obstacles involved.

Although the Rough Guide was slagged off somewhat by previous reviewers for being a) too big to be properly useful as a hiking guide, and b) too useful specifically for hikers (there's no pleasing some people!), I'm glad to say that it's perfect for me - I'm not going to take it on the trip, but I'll be siphoning every little bit of information from it while planning.

And there's a lot of information. For instance, all the telephone numbers for refuges are there ... Read More:

: Languedoc and Roussillon Rough Guide (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
This is easily the most feeble of all the many Rough Guides I have used while abroad. If the author did all the research and writing on his own, than that's a mistake which shows. He's clearly uninterested in art (viz. cursory descriptions of Musee Fabre in Montpellier and Musee Goya at Castres), so someone who is interested should have been employed to help him out.

There are glaring omissions - the rural area around the Herault Valley is fascinating and offers lots of walking possibilities, and there should have been clear advice on where the best beaches are on the Languedoc Coast in the Montpellier-Narbonne-Beziers sector; Catlos more or less dismisses this whole littoral, which is wrong, as there are a few nice, uncrowded places ... I'm in the process of planning a trip to the Languedoc and I've been reading several guides to the region. This is not a terrible guide, but it's the one I liked the least.

This book would be good if you already know exactly where you want to go and what you want to do. For example, there is plenty of specific information on things like opening hours and places to stay. It's very well researched. But if you're earlier in the planning stages than that, it doesn't really do it. The chapters leap about from place to place and it gets confusing trying to work out where they are in relation to one another. Moreover, nowhere sounds particularly enticing! (Apart from Montpellier: clearly a favorite of the author). Several towns that are singled out ... Read More:
