This is a good, useful map. Two sided, each 55cm x 65cm, scale 1:40,000, 2.5cm =1km, which is about 1.5inches = 1 mile. Not quite as good as a British Ordnance Survey map, but better and cheaper (from Amazon) than any maps I saw in Madeira. All the main roads, tourist info, contours, (with good background colouring to indicate height,essential in such a mountainous region), footpath details, with references to walk numbers in guide-books, levadas, a place-name index... There is also a small street-map of the centre of Funchal, but it's really too small to be of use. Collect a free advertising tourist map from your hotel for the centre of Funchal. There was not much new in this edition and I wished I had stuck with the previous version. It's misleading to call it 'new' when so much of the content is 'old'. It represented poor value in my opinion. Also, some of the walk descriptions are vague and not that easy to follow with great chunks of the routes not described at all.

This is a useful map. Two sided, one side is a streetmap of Funchal, size 40cm x 60cm, with all districts and the major roads named. It marks all the town bus routes and their terminuses. There is also a table showing details of their routes, and notes about bus services, etiquette, frequency... It would not be a substitute for a tourists plan of the very centre of Funchal, (though you can pick these up free everywhere). The other side is a map of the island, 50cm x 80cm, scale 1:60,000, 5cm=3km, showing roads, contours, tourist information, a place-name index, plus details of the across-island bus routes, with timetable information for some routes. I bought this from amazon.co.uk and used it on a recent holiday to Madeira. We tried out three walks, not covered in any other books we've read and really enjoyed them. Shirley's directions and descriptions of the walks are great and took us to some places we would not have otherwise discovered. She also goes into interesting detail about the local plant life, history and places of interest. An excellent guide, which we'll be using again on our next trip.

This is an essential book for walking in Madeira. We liked the style of the descriptions and were impressed by the accuracy - no getting lost! The range of walks was useful, with choices of walks of varying difficulty and length etc. We would heartily recommend this to anyone wanting to walk on the island, newcomers and returning visitors alike.

This is an excellent, detailed guide book. Summarising the key sights and activities with colour photos at the beginning and then going into more depth later in the book. Definitley recommend this book as your guide to Madeira. And it includes a CD-ROM. Great value through Amazon.

I went to Madeira for 3 days and took this guide and I'm glad I did it. It focus more on Funchal but with so litle time its ideal to plane the days and not waste one second of time. It also makes a great quick reference to the hit points like top 10 local dishes, top 10 gardens, top 10 beaches, top 10 warnings etc. It has great info about all the best places and I found the bus information the most usefull for people like me, who wanted to save money but enjoy the trip at the same time. It has lots of pictures of what to expect, usefull information about the island, info on prices, small maps and the best locations and monuments: the very best top 10 of places you just have to visit while in Madeira, places like The Catedral of funchal, ...
