This is the worst wrongly described product i have ever purchased from Amazon. It is sold as a "Road Map" when it arrived it is a hiking map with just three or four areas of Crete shown in detail but no main roads the very reason i purchased it as i shall be driving in Crete.

Crete is not yet an all year round holiday resort but many spring and late summer visitors are taking advantage of warm weather to take to the hills. Walking in the peak summer months can be difficult because of high temperatures and lack of water in high places. This book by Lorraine Wilson is a useful addition to the handful of guidebooks devoted to walking in Crete. However, the book has its drawbacks. Certain walks lack sufficient detailed route description. I had to return to one walk three times before I got it right because vital details had not been included - not through my own stupidity, I might add. With a detail map I could have solved this problem immediately, but due to the paranoia of the Greek government these are not ... Read More:

I totally agree with the previous reviewer that this is an excellent map with plenty of detail in you want to explore this beautiful island by car and on foot. I was amused by the fact that petrol stations are shown as we have never been anywhere with as many as Crete.

I don't know how we would have managed to negotiate Chania and Rethynmno without the street plans on this map which correctly set out the one way system. Without such a plan of Heraklion, we managed to drive the wrong way down a one way street there!

Place names are all in Greek and English which helps in interpreting road signs - in small places these are sometimes only signposted in Greek.

I agree that the map is very flimsy - it started to split ... Read More:

We bought this map for a holiday on Crete in early 2008 and we used a hire car to get around the island. We are usually good at using maps to find our way but with this one we wasted a lot of time on wrong turnings.

The statement in the synopsis that "every road is included" is far from true. It is just not anything like that detailed. To add to the difficulty, there are a lot of major road developments underway on Crete and the map has become badly out-of-date. A good map is needed because of the lack of signposting especially in towns and villages. The coastal resorts have also seen numerous route changes and little seems to correspond to what is on the map. Sometimes a large hotel would be found where the map indicated a road going through. Christopher Somerville's delightfully self-deprecating account takes you with him deep into the gorges and high into the mountain plateaus of that most mysterious and harshly beautiful island. Armed with rudimentary Greek and ebullient good will, delighting in music, fellowship and the absurd, he works his way through to the heart of Crete. Along the way he shares just the right amount of myth, history (ancient and modern), social and political insight and his own inner journey to make this an unforgettable piece of writing.

: Falling for Icarus: A Journey Among the Cretans
As a Cretan, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author has a deep and genuine understanding of the Cretan spirit and the idiosyncracies of the various characters; even when at times he must have felt totally (and rightly) exasperated, he writes always from the perspective of one who understands and ultimately loves, and never rises to cheap-shot caricaturisation. Every word has the feel of authenticity.
Laugh-aloud humour, pathos, lyricism -this book has it all.
Enjoy!

I liked this book when I got it - it seemed to give good, easy-to-follow descriptions of the walks. I bought it for just one of the walks, close to where we were staying (near Kolymbari).

We set off one day around 4.30 p.m. - the walk was said to be 10 km, with the first 8 climbing up the mountain via the asphalt road, and the last 2 km on pathways cross-country almost directly downhill back into Kolymbari.

It was August, and very hot, but the climb up was a good walk. Very demanding in the 30C heat, but fantastic views, as the book described.

We very easily identified the place to turn off the road to start our descent. However, after only about 50m we had difficulty matching the way to the description in the book and after 100 ... Read More:
