This is a useful guidebook to walking in one of the most spectacular areas in the Alps (or indeed anywhere). The book has a wide range of walks, from short easy strolls to very strenuous all-day hikes. The timings allocated are roughly right in terms of walking time but it is wise to add extra time for lunch stops, photo stops, and so on. As the previous reviewer says, the actual walk descriptions are very brief. But in most cases this does not matter, since the paths are clearly marked and signposted. There are no maps in the book (except for some very rough sketches of the valleys) so you really need to have a detailed hiking map as well. So this book is not essential, but worth having for planning routes beforehand and as a souvenir (since ... Read More:

In this Cicerone Alpine guide published in 2006 Kev Reynolds describes his new route the" Tour of the Jungfrau Region". That word "region" is important - since this is not a circular route around a mountain like the tour of the Matterhorn or Mont Blanc. It is a route in the Bernese Oberland in the vicinity of the Jungfrau. In essence, it involves no new paths, but links together some of the great day walks of the region into a single 107km "highlights" horseshoe route. And what highlights they are! A superb route which provides a virtually continuous panorama of splendid peaks... Jungfrau, Eiger, Monch, Wetterhorn ...the list goes on. The guide, though slim at 125 pages, is packed with information on side trips, alternative bad weather routes, ... Read More:

I did most of the French side this summer and found it to be spot on. You could be travelling to a town/city by train and reading about your destination, when you get there its totally like the descriptions in the book. Theres lots of background info on Swiss soceity/culture which helps you to chat with the locals by knowing their frame of reference.

If you want a good holiday in Switzerland you have to travel around and see the natural sights, this book is great for planning your itinery.

Only flaw I spotted was I was walking on a bridge in Bern that wasn't on the LP map and was lost for about 2 minutes.

If visiting, its best to buy this before you travel so you can do a day by day plan. I did and it ran very ... Read More:

Harrer has researched the history of the seminal attempts on this vertical mile of rock in meticulous detail and as a result this book gives a rich picture of the physical and spiritual strength required to achieve this most famous of summits. His account of their own first ascent is gripping yet prosaic; I found this style perfectly conveyed the necessary drama without tipping into self-indulgence, which is also mostly absent from his descriptions of later attempts. What struck me very much was the capriciousness of fate when attempting the North Face; the difference between the heroic first successful summit and the many failed attempts surrounding it is a stone falling here, or a snow slide there. Perhaps to say luck plays a part is not correct, ... Read More:

If you like the wit of Jonathan Ross and verbal diarrhoea this is the book for you and after reading it you will not bother visiting Switzerland - I made the mistake of buying this instead of an updated edition of the Lonely Planet Switzerland which is an accurate and concise guide, giving you all the information you require.

I was looking for more information about walking in Switzerland having just returned from my first experience of walking the mountains and hills around Zermatt. I ordered the book having read the review at 'Amazon' and was delighted to find that the book was both detailed and accurate. The descriptions were just as I had found the walks around Zermatt. The book will probably encourage me to walk in other areas within Switzerland.
