Hibbert's history of Rome, from Romulus to Mussolini, is an excellent introduction to the events that have shaped this incredible city.

This is not a history of the Roman Republic, Empire, Papacy, Renaissance or Risorgimento. Instead the focus remains fixed on the city of Rome itself: its buildings, reputation and inhabitants. Its streets and piazzas have witnessed so many of the crucial moments in these states and movements but Hibbert's work ventures away from the city walls only for a full introduction to events within.

The history adds an additional element to any visit to Rome, not only providing a history of the major landmarks but also helping the visitor imagine the city in lost eras. The only major improvement ... Read More:

I purchased this volume for a trip with a school party (GCSE & A level) that included the Musée d'Orsay and the Louvre.

The book, although weighty, is ideally shaped to live in a handbag, manbag, or even a roomy pocket (although in that case, get the Louvre one as well and balance yourself so as not to look like Quasimodo...).

The pictures are clear, the notes are superb, and I certainly wouldn't have been without it. Hundreds of pictures, hundreds of pages. All for £7 or so. Brilliant.

This is without doubt a must have book. The photographs are breathtaking and the narrative supports them well. This is a unique insight into some of the more private areas of the Vatican as well as some of the more well known. It is now a few years since its publication, but that doesnt detract from its impact. Go, read and be inspired!

The book's characteristics are the elegant, rich in historical and cultural content, insightful but witty and light in touch text and the beautiful photographs of landscape, seascape, buildings, monuments, ruins and works of art which are inextricably interwoven and mutually reinforcing;the impact on the reader is not merely additive but truly synergistic.

We travel with the author from the city of his birth, Venice aboard the Black Swan, a renovated 1899 yawl along trading routes of the Venetian Empire visiting the coastline and islands of the Adriatic, Ionian and Aegean seas with Istanbul (formerly Constantinople)the final destination. Some of these lands were former colonies of 'La Serenissima' and we witness its legacy in the form ... Read More:
