This is a truly iconic disc, the legendary performance that introduced an eccentric Canadian pianist to the world at large. Gould had made a sensational debut in New York with a programme that included Beethoven's Op 109 sonate, a Sweelinck fantasia and the Webern variations. Snapped up by a CBS talent scout, he requested his first release should be Bach's Goldberg Variations, a seldom performed work the Leipzig cantor wrote for an aristocratic insomniac. As the recording took place, Gould sat on his pigmy stool, swaying, groaning, humming and playing like a god. Inbetween takes he popped pills, donned his overcoat and ate arrowroot biscuits washed down with spring water as the press gathered curiously to see the spectacle. The resulting LP ... Read More:

I feel compelled to write this review as I think it is slightly unfair to give a one-star review based on his constant humming.

I think the first thing to say is that the Goldberg Variations is a fantastic piece of music, and is pretty much infallable as far as music goes. Goulds playing achives a great depth and variety of tone, whilst maintaining a strong sence of clarity that lets all of Bach's lines sing through, I think Gould has achieved something mind-blowing here!

Whilst at first one could find the performance marred by his constant humming, and it is prevelant, especially when listening on headphones, it is worth listening past. I think it provides a unique insight into how he is shaping the music that we don't ... Read More:

This recording by Gould is far too eccentrically moody: it unsettles. Now, there is nothing wrong with that, if that is what the music is designed to do: but, was that Bach's purpose? Too much Gould, not enough Bach.

Glenn Gould plays the music beatifully on both recordings. He plays more slowly and smoothly in the 1981 recording than in the 1955 recording. The 1955 recording is really exciting and the 1981 recording is so elegant. The 1955 recording is dramatic and so fast that it lasts for half an hour. The 1981 recording is extremely slow that it last for an hour.

This is a clasical guitar album recorded by John Williams in his style of ultimate perfection. Don't confuse this with Flamenco Spanish guitar.

Perlman is a violonist whose perormance is regarded as standard when it comes to Bach's works; in this album however, I was a bit disappointed of finding what I would expect in that the whole work sounds rather classic than baroque.
also, the orchestra seems to be a bit axcited of having Perlman as the violinist (!!?) as you simply can't hear the orchestra as it's always in the background. This gets quite annoying when it comes to question and answer parts between the violin and orchestra or when it's the violin who should be rather in background.. but that's a matter of recording I should think..

but in general, you still, no doubt, can enjoy the perfection of Perlman's performance, if you're not fussy about different interpretations of Bach's works..

This is a music from the another dimension. Absolute clearity of the mind. A fragile balance you are looking... A touch of something beautiful that's uncomparable bigger than you.

Simple, but in very different way.

Must have!

I somehow seem to have caught a certain negativity of feeling towards Gould. People told me he was a showman, not really a musician, too egotistical to let the music really shine through. So it was with trepidation that I listened to this recording for the first time (the first time I had heard Gould.

All of my other recordings of Bach are by women, namely Roslyn Tureck and Martha Argerich. I somehow believed that only a woman could really have the patience to devote their time to such unpretentious music (well, unpretentious compared to someone like Prokofiev, which Argerich plays so I don't know what I was thinking!) And yet somehow my Roslyn Tureck recordings never seemed to hit the spot.

Now I have heard Gould, and I shall never look back!! What masterful playing, ... Read More:

the master himself-why SONY/BMG dont do this with other artists is curious;
but the playing is excellent as well as the sound, for the dates of recording-and Im
exposed to pieces ive never heard, or even heard of before.
Who knew IS stuck his big toe in to the water of Jazz...?
The shoddy booklet is a real shame, but I cannot complain,
its a box set that doesnt require a fork lift to bring into the house-
and I spent EXACTLY $26.00 USD for it at TOWER Mail Order
true value for money.

I JUST WANT TO AGREE WITH EVERY WORD THAT MR JORDAN HAD SAID ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR RECORDING, NOT JUST OF 'THE LARK', BUT OF SERENADE TO MUSIC ALSO. IN FACT I JUST LOVE EVERYTHING ON THIS ALBUM! I BOUGHT MY VINYL COPY IN THE EARLY 70'S AND IT IS NOW SO WORN OUT THAT I DECIDED TO LOOK TO SEE IF A CD WAS AVAILABLE. WHAT JOY! NOT ONLY HAVE I BEEN ABLE TO FIND A CD OF MY TREASURED RECORDING, BUT WITH BONUS TRACKS, AND AT AN INCREDIBLY LOW PRICE. FOR ME THIS IS THE PURCHASE OF THE MONTH.
