There is a great feel to this album. The tracks slither and glide around your sound system and grow on you over time. In the 5 years's I've had this album it has grown on me like a fine wine.

There are two weak tracks, but don't all albums have those?

The band Plant assembled here (and reprised more or less for Mighty Rearranger) are the best live band I have ever seen... sadly they arent currently touring as Plant is on the road with Alison Krauss.

If they are to record together no more, this album will stand as the zenith of what they achieved - if you like Plant/zep or the general vibe of the 1960's west coast american blues movement you need this album! Its a underrated classic, and tracking back the ... Read More:

A disappointing selection of 2nd rate songs & performances; it should have remained in the outakes bin. And here I was, a JJ believer hoping to discover more of his great music - ah well, back to "Guitar Man" I guess !!

Much has been made of this as a covers album.

I go back to the golden age of Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou, who in the early days seldom penned a song of their own. They were singers. They picked and interpreted songs. Some were well known, many were not, and oftentimes theirs was the first version with which the wider world was familiar, making theirs the definitive version, and not the original. It's with that standard and that approach in mind that I come to Alison Moorer's 'Mockingbird'. Many of the songs here are not just better known in other versions, they are part of the popular music canon, so I wondered is it even possible to wrest songs like 'Ring of Fire' or 'Both Sides Now' from their creators, and make them your own in a new ... Well I think this is a great album but find it almost unlistenable on aything approaching decent stereo because of the relentlessly compressed vocals. Maybe this is why they've remastered it so soon after the initial release and would love to hear a review from someone who has heared the re-mastered version. After being bumped once by Robert Plant I'm reluctant to cough up again unless the poor sound quality has been corrected.
5 Star album + 2 star sound quality = 3 stars. Please bear in mind I've not heard the remaster.

Rediscovered this album a few weeks back and I can't recommend it too highly. It's one of Plant's best solo albums and a couple of the songs are up there with any Zeppelin classic, Calling to You, I Believe & 29 Palms in particular.

This is a great album. Mary Gauthier (I've been told it's pronounced 'Go-Shay') has a hard edge to her vocals - she reminds me in some way of Lucinda Williams, with a little bit of John Prine thrown in for good measure on her earlier albums! For me, the best tracks on this CD are 'Snakebit', 'Can't Find the Way' (about the New Orleans floods?) and 'Please'. But there isn't a bad track on this album - and the sound and production are perfect. Mary's voice is the main instrument, but accompanied by some great guitar playing. And I'm convinced that the drummer on 'Last of the Hobo Kings' is drumming with his hands on bare skin rather than drums! This is a fantastic album, and at the price it's a bargain. Don't hesitate, just buy it!

Another Country doesn't actually refer to some kind of re-inventing of Country Music (or Americana in it's other guise) but to the fact that how, in a time of personal turmoil, Tift Merritt emigrated to France. The problems aren't quantified in any great detail, but its clear that the Tift Merritt of her third album is more disillusioned and introspective than the Tift Merritt of her earlier albums.

And whilst one wouldn't wish to inflict such emotional pain onto anyone, it is clear that these problems have gone some way to raising her music up to another level.

There are a handful of up-tempo numbers, Tell Me Something True, with it's Mowton-esque backing is one such highlight, but most of the album is a more subdued affair. It's none the less ... Read More:

I can see why another reviewer thought Carlene's voice is past its best but in my opinion it's the production, engineering and mixing of this CD which lets her down badly. All these tasks were entrusted to one man, John McFee, who also plays virtually every instrument on the album and while it's obvious from the liner notes that they share a great mutual admiration it sounds like he was too immersed in this project to bring any critical faculties to bear. Any spontaneity and soul which may have been present in the music to start with has been lost in all the overdubbing and her voice is so far back in the mix that I can only hear about half the words, a situation made worse by the fact that there's no lyric sheet provided with the disc. The sound stage is also very "thin ... Read More:

Maybe it is just me but I am a bit disappointed by this album. At his best Louris writes some wonderfully bitter sweet love songs that few can match. Neil Young's more mellow output comes to mind and they have a similar voices and Louris at times compares very well with one of the greats of American music.

At first hearing I thought this album was going to be a satisfying follow-up to the Jayhawks Rainy Day Music, which was in many respects, was as close to a Louris solo album as you can find. However while the feel is very similar Vagabonds just does not have the melodic strength of the likes of Tail Spin, Eyes of Sarahjayne or One Man's problem.

It is a decent and listenable album but I can't hear the magic. Vagabonds is, at the end of the day, ... Read More:
