This is a really beuatiful album performed by the violin legend Nigel Kennedy. The works are little known Polish concertos but as soon as I heard them they felt familiar, maybe it's the beautiful music or the way he plays them from the heart. I've heard that he will be performing in the UK in 2008, I can't wait!

I bought this after watching Nige on the last night of the proms. His virtuoso talent is unrestrained on this album, and is very impressive. The instrumental tracks have strong melodies which are easy on the ear, and quite memorable. I felt the vocal performances were not up to the mark (especially Nigels'), perhaps the money he saved on the DIY album cover would have been better spent on a stronger vocalist to match Nigel's own talent.

I was introduced to Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells in my teenage years, and have bought and listened to a great deal of his music in the intervening quarter century or so.
I guess it's always a mixed blessing to produce iconic debut material, and it was a peak that, in my opinion, Mike would struggle to reach again for many years.
Follow up albums were merititious in their own right, but over time I think it became obvious that something, perhaps his increasingly strained relations with Virgin Records meant that albums of the late eighties seemed to lack "desire" and Mike was maybe going through the motions to fulfil his contractual obligations - and with the exception of Amarok, I shied away from Mike's music.

I am constantly playing this in the car because I love it so much, other recordings are good but this is just a little bit different, in the Allegro movement of Spring if you listen to the bit before the whole violin and viola section thunders it's way to the tumultuous tweeting solo, you will notice that Nigel bow's 4 times in quick succession instead of the usual 2, the cadenza allows for this and Nigel exploited it with typical panache. It's good to see him back in the limelight once more with his new recording, now lives in Krakow with his Polish missus.

As a fan of "The Armed Man', 'Requiem' and 'This Land Of Ours', it's no wonder I listened to the CD prepared to be instantly blown away. However, at first I found it to be less inspired than the previous works, yet was delighted to find Jenkins was coming to my home town to conduct Stabat Mater, which I went to see last night.

It's true that the movements with more pace have the signature quirky rhythms we have come to expect from Karl Jenkins; yet the more contemplative movements are profound and poignant, particularly those featuring the amazing Belinda Sykes. Her Arabic singing and playing of the duduk (which I discovered last night is a recorder-sized instrument with a double reed) is nothing short of mesmerising, both on the CD and live. ... Read More:

EMI classics have done their Platinum treatment on Nigel Kennedy, offering 3 of his popular albums at knockdown price.

Two of the albums - Vivaldi's Four Seasons and the Mendelssohn and Bruch concertos from 1988 and 1989 - present Kennedy's traditional classical playing while the 1999 album Classic Kennedy is a collection of classical and folk music, mostly transcribed for the violin from other instruments, which gives the violinist freedom to express his improvisational skills.

The Four Seasons album with the English Chamber Orchestra is played with an edge giving the violin more prominence than is sometimes heard (this is a collection of violin concertos remember). The Bruch / Mendelssohn concertos are often-played works which give the ... Read More:

This Cistercian abbey has a continous history since its foundation. My only criticsm is that according to the Rule Cistercians should chant in the Ambrosian mode - very slow & ponderous, and this CD is a little too fast. One of the plus points is that Cistercians do not have choir boys so the overall effect is a deeper more inspiring chant.

Although not having any classical music training, nor the ability to write a critical analysis, all I can say is that from the opening notes to the closing chord I was absolutely captivated.
It's a hypnotic collection of pieces which simply draw you into following their every turn, step, phrase and passage. The melodies are haunting and indeed sinuous, sensual, emotive...you really can't avoid flowing with them.
The technical aspects mean nothing to me other than I have a deep appreciation for the work and energy of Kennedy as well his phenomenal ability to make me want hear again and again whatever he does - be it jazz, Hendrix and now this.
I agree with the others - it's a must have, but not a shelf filler. This shows up in my top 3 on my MP3 player time after ... Read More:

I bought this recording because my son, a student at Durham, was in the cathedral for the first live performance and rated it highly. I was a Deep Purple fan in my youth, too! The first time I listened to the concerto all the way through I was left feeling slightly 'flat', as other reviewers have commented, but I have listened to it quite a few times now and love it more and more. I was going to say that 'From Prebends Bridge' is my favourite movement but I went and checked the CD and decided I'd be hard pushed to chose one track above the others. Listen to them all - more than once - and see what you think!
